Dr. Duane Wood

Professional Background

I graduated from the Durban Institute of Technology, South Africa with a Master's Degree in Chiropractic. Since qualifying, I have worked in multidisciplinary clinics for over 25 years, treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. I am registered with the General Chiropractic Council and committed to continuing professional development.

Why Garioch Chiropractic?

I wanted to create a patient-focused environment where the number one goal is to get patients better as quickly and effectively as possible. That could only be achieved by getting the best chiropractors in the region to join our team and make sure we also had the best front desk staff to support not only the patients, but the chiropractors as well.

Clinical Approach/Interests

We are all unique. Our injuries may often present as common, but the factors surrounding that injury are all unique to ourselves. My goal is to be able to understand these factors: How the injury occurred and why the injury occurred. This is achieved through a detailed history and physical examination. Once I understand the nature and cause of the injury, I can formulate a treatment plan to help the patient heal as quickly and effectively as possible. Part of this plan is also to educate the patient about their injury, empowering them to help in the long-term management of their condition.

In one morning I may see a baby with reflux, a teenager with headaches, a sportsperson with a sprained ankle, a builder with acute back pain and a pensioner with tennis elbow. Each one of these patients is unique and so too is their management. What interests me is how a small, positive change to their nervous system can have such a profound effect on their wellbeing.

Advice & Education

Chiropractic care is not about the ‘clicks’ and ‘pops’ and ‘putting bones back in place’. It is about making the smallest positive change to the central nervous system that will allow the body to heal and perform in the way it was intended to, allowing us to achieve maximum health.

My advice to anyone feeling apprehensive is that it’s completely normal. Social media has given chiropractic such a bad reputation with ridiculous videos of aggressive cracking and clicking of joints. Our approach is more patient-focused and therefore each treatment is tailored to a patient's needs.

A first appointment is about listening, understanding your concerns and carrying out a thorough assessment. Everything is explained clearly and treatment is only provided where appropriate and consented to.
